The Leaves of the Tree

Tree of Life sculpture

Tree of Life, art in the service of a kind of healing. from Mozambique

Hi, Gang!

Every year at this time, I along with anyone else who works through the One Year Bible every year find myself reading the last chapter of the book of Revelation. So, I read “On either side of the river [of life] is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” (Revelation 22:2)

It’s a beautiful image. It has been adopted as the metaphor for a collective narrative practice designed to help people overcome trauma, and was one of the works in the Transforming Arms into Tools – swords into plowshares, spears into pruning hooks, AK47s into art – project.

I don’t imagine it makes sense to add “heal the nations” to my list of New Year’s resolutions, but no doubt there is something I could do more regularly that would advance the cause.
